Hello, OutStandish Readers! We've had a lot of progress in the Standish House. We had a work day where I helped my dad finish several of the window sills in Vivian's room. I'm still in the process of scraping the paint from the trim that goes under the windows and keeps the sills intact. Once they are all installed, they will be given the same dark blue paint job that the rest of the trim received. During our work day, we found a suitable door to use as one of our back doors. The previous door was broken when we bought the house, and has been boarded up. Since then, we've been searching for a five-panel door that would match the original. Turns out, one of the upstairs closet doors fit the description and just needed a few inches trimmed from it. Keep reading to find out more about the other progress on the house this week! The most notable area of progress that's been going on in the house was installation of tiles in the upstairs shower and in the kitchen. The tiles have had quite a long, full life before they were installed in our house, and we're glad to have them added to our new home. On a late summer trip to Chicago, we visited Salvage One, an architectural salvage store and looked for things that we might use in the house. While there, we discovered they had a large selection of tiles on sale. When we were looking at the tiles, we found out they were handpainted in England, and originally installed in South America. Somehow they found their way to Chicago. In the end, we picked up thirteen tiles from the store. Last week, it was time for the tiles to finally be installed. But first, Amanda gave them a thorough cleaning. To clean the tiles, Amanda soaked the tiles in vinegar, and then cleaned off the old grout using a chisel and steel wool. Once the tiles were cleaned, it was time for them to be installed. We hired Steve Shaefer from Steve Schaefer Flooring to install the tiles in the upstairs shower. As of now, the project is almost finished and he's doing a great job! In addition to the upstairs shower, Steve also installed tiles in the kitchen. After we get the upper cabinets installed, we're having Steve come back and make the finishing touches. Special "Thanks" to Steve for all his hard work! The upstairs bathroom and kitchen along with the rest of the house is coming together nicely. Stay tuned to our blog as we continue our work rehabilitating the Standish House!
