This week, we had an Off Week for our work on the Standish House. This doesn't mean that contractors stopped their work, as they were busy wrapping up the roughing-in of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. The reason for our break from the house stemmed from an offer that we couldn't refuse. Amanda had some relatives in Bowling Green, Kentucky that were looking to downsize and get rid of a large bedroom suite. It consisted of a Queen-size 4-poster bed frame, a dresser, wardrobe, and two end tables. They thought it would look really nice inside our new home and were willing to give it to us for Free, if we made the trip to pick it up. Luckily, Amanda's sister lives near Bowling Green so we were able to go visit her and her husband for the weekend. On Saturday morning, we woke up early and picked up our U-Haul and started our journey to pick up the furniture. When we arrived, the movers we had hired were there, ready to load up the truck. After taking Sunday off, we headed home on Monday morning with a loaded truck full of furniture. On Monday, we arrived at the house in Jefferson City and were met by Joe Armstrong of First Class Movers. Joe and one of his men was able to unload the truck. During the unloading process, Joe informed me that he would have to come back the next day with more men, so they could haul the two larger pieces, the dresser and wardrobe, upstairs. The next day, the movers returned, this time with a team of four guys, Joe included. They devised a plan involving covering the bannisters with blankets and lifting the furniture over the first landing and then sliding the furniture up the stairs, balanced on the bannister. Then things were pivoted onto the floor and dragged across the floor on blankets. Altogether, it took every bit of all four of them to haul the dresser and wardrobe upstairs. There were some close calls and intense moments as things were hauled up to the second floor. In the end, all the furniture made it upstairs, in one piece. Joe's team was prompt, affordable, and did a professional job moving the furniture into the house and even placed the furniture where they were directed. We hope to use First Class Movers again when we're finally able to move into the Standish House and make it our home. Hello again, faithful readers! This week turned out to be a light week, but we still managed to get stuff done. On Thursday, it rained all day and into the night. With some work still needing to be done on the roof as well as awaiting the gutters to be installed, our basement took on a bit of water. Thursday evening, Amanda went down to the house during the storm to vacuum water from the basement using our trusty Shop-Vac. It was a dirty job, but she handled it well. Hello again, OutStandish Fans! Here we are again with another week of progress behind us. We had a productive week, with things going our way, and measurable progress was made on our individual tasks that we set out to work on. Before we go over the week's progress, we have an important addition to our growing group of contractors. We have hired Don Bernskoetter Plumbing to lay all new pipes throughout the house. So far, they have been busy roughing in the kitchen and upstairs bathroom. Hello Faithful Readers! We've made you wait long enough. It's time to announce the paint color for the exterior of the Standish House! The winner... …with a good portion of the vote from people we surveyed... BLUE!Keep reading as we'll go over what else got accomplished this week on the house. I'll warn you now...some of it ain't pretty.
